Overview of the Park Hall 3D Cup 2009 competition

The format of the event has been devised to complement the 3D Championships being held 25-27th September, allowing those pilots who are competing in the 3D Championships to perform there routines in front of a panel of judges in a competitive environment or simply gain some/further competition experience before the BIG ONE! The format is not exactly the same, it has been changed slightly to allow as many people to enter the event as possible!!

The competition will be held on Saturday and Sunday 8th and 9th August 2009 and contains two rounds of competitive flights, as follows:
> One Set Manoeuvres within a freestyle flight round
> One Freestyle round

The combined scores of the two rounds will determine the fly-off positions.

The fly-offs will see the top five pilots perform their flights again (from a zeroed score) and the result of these fly-offs will determine the overall winners.

Freestyle flight containing Set Manoeuvres

The pilots have 3.5mins in which to impress the judges with there ‘technical’ 3D ability. Although there are no pre-defined manoeuvres to select from, this round is for the pilots to demonstrate the most complex 3D man’vres they are capable of and they should be choreographed to create a free-flowing flight.

The Freestyle flight containing set manoeuvres will be judged for:
> Set Manoeuvres Technical merit
> Set Manoeuvres Execution
> Overall appearance

Freestyle Flight

The flight should be as close to 3 minutes in length as possible.

The freestyle flight will be judged for:
> Content
> Smoothness
> Planned structure
> Personal flying style

Information

Dropping the pre-defined list of manoeuvres has many advantages:
> Allows those pilots that reach the finals to bring that extra special points grabbing manoeuvre into play,
> Allows pilots to change the flight on the day to suit weather conditions etc,
> It makes the 'backroom' organisation and scoring system a lot easier!
> It allows pilots of lower skill level to enter an event for the first time, and simply 'give it a go' as there is no minimum skill level required to enter.

Also the duration and scope of the round is inline with the intent of the 3D Championships Sets Freestyle round, allowing pilots to effectively fly the same round in the 3D Cup, as they are preparing for the 3D Champs if they wish.

Note: The number of qualification rounds completed by each pilot may change depending on the number of entries received. As a minimum all pilots will complete 1 Set and 1 Freestyle flight but if time is available or we have a smaller number of entrants extra rounds will be added, with the best Set and Freestyle score for each pilot being used to determines the overall positioning prior to the finals fly-off.

Classes:

All pilots in the event will be judged against the same criteria i.e. there will be no separate classes based on the perceived level of a pilots ability, as this is very hard to enforce or provide guidelines about which class you would enter.

Instead of skill level classes, there will be different classes that pilots will automatically be entered for or can tailor their entry to suit.

Classes will include:
3D Cup Class – All pilots will automatically be entered into this class.
> Trophies for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be awarded for this class.

Junior Class – This class will include all pilots aged 15 years and below. (Age limit TBC once all entries received)
Veteran Class – This class will include all pilots aged 30 years and above. (Age limit TBC once all entries received)
> Trophies will be awarded for the highest placed pilot in each of these classes.

Electric Class – This class will be for all pilots choosing to fly electric models.
50 Size Nitro Class - This class will be for all pilots choosing to fly 50 size models.
90 Size Nitro Class - This class will be for all pilots choosing to fly 90 size models.
> Trophies will be awarded for the highest placed pilot in each of these classes.

Note: to qualify for the above 3 classes the pilot must fly ALL competition flights with the same class model.
